Inside the flat-pack town

Tiny, nondescript Älmhult is where it all began for Ikea. We go on a very unusual tour, starting at the Ikea Hotel

The storemanager

Store manager Fredrik Håkansson has worked at Ikea Älmhult for 23 years. “The store in Älmhult is certainly special,” he says. “But there are also special expectations of it. In one way it was emotional to leave the original store in the centre of town, but it was too small. We have over 10,000 products in the Ikea range, and the new Älmhult store has the biggest range of products of any store in the world, including a glasshouse with seasonal products, a paper shop and IKEA Fynd [the only one of its kind in the world, it sells at discount prices]. People travel from all over Sweden to come to this one. It’s a special part of the Ikea story.”
